Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
