At least thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
